Shared Reading

Sharing books with your child is so important!  Here are some tips to get your preschooler actively involved in the reading process:

--Point to the illustration on the book's cover and ask your child what he or she thinks the story is about.
--With predictable books like The Napping House by Audrey Wood, stop before the end of a predictable line and let your child finish it.
--As you read have your child turn the pages
--Ask open ended questions:  "What do you think is going to happen next?" or "How would you feel?"
--Expand on what your child says by paraphrasing, adding details and using new words.

Reading together is such a good way to encourage your child to enjoy books.  You open up the world to them in the pages of a book and what better quality time can you spend with your child than cuddled up together with a good book?
