Did you hear that Teddy Roosevelt came to our library? Yes, he did! We had a great time hearing the story of how the teddy bear was named after this 26th president of the United States. Mr. Joe Wiegand reprised the role of Theodore Roosevelt and entertained us with many stories of Roosevelt's early years and life in the White House.
And here is our Mrs. Anna with the teddy bear given to us that night:
We are looking for a place in the children's department to display our little Teddy Roosevelt bear.

Quilts!!
The library hosts a quilt show every October. This has been going on since the 1970s. Our director, Sandy McCandless, started the quilt show when she was an outreach librarian. This is something many of us in the community look forward to every year. The quilts are just amazing!! The community votes on a favorite quilt. First, second and third place ribbons are awarded. This is a sampling of this year's quilts. Hope you enjoy taking a look around:

Back to Blogging....
Wow! Let a little thing like summertime come along and this blogging experience gets shoved to the background! We had a great time with our Summer Reading Program this summer and the children participating in the program read over 9,500 books! That's Great!! That is an average of 32 books for each child that reported back to us at the end of the summer. No telling how many books everyone read but just didn't have time to let us know about it at the end of the program.
Anyways....Have you been into the children's department lately? If so, then you've seen our new couches. We love them. L-o-v-e, love them!! This bright color just makes the room more cheerful. Take a look:
And from the back:
Let us know what you think!!

Sandy Hook Memorial
Not long ago I mentioned the Sandy Hook Memorial our Friends of the Decatur Public Library were purchasing for the library. I'd like to share these pictures of that memorial. What a wonderful and kind gesture this is by our Friends. I'd especially like to thank Beck McDowell for the idea and for creating such a thoughtful list of books to memorialize each person. Ms. McDowell spoke so eloquently to us of her reasons behind creating this memorial for her library in Huntsville. Long before the Sandy Hook event, she wrote a book about someone in a similar situation. The similarities moved her and led to this beautiful list of books to commemorate each person.

A Special Memorial
How wonderful it is to have such a kind and compassionate Friends group. The Friends of the Decatur Public Library have donated 26 children's books in memory of the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School. Many of those books will be on display the night of our Open House.
Our Friends got this idea from a local author, Beck McDowell. Beck McDowell will be here the night of the Open House to talk about this collection. Step on over to Ms. McDowell's website for a list of the books to be added to our collection: http://www.beckmcdowell.com/index.php/blog/item/book-list-for-sandy-hook-project
